A player who wields a weapon outside their proficiency receives a -2 to attack. I have a player choose a proficiency in a particular weapon (not just a weapon type). Now proficiencies are treated a little different. GreatSwords includes the greatsword, estoc, and the ultra-greatsword- each weapon has its own stats(damage, speed, weight, price, damage type). Each weapon type has a list of individual weapons. I changed the categories to simple, swords, greatswords, axes, bludgeoning, bows, and special. I revamped the whole weapon proficiencies and weapon types. This may get long and I hope I can articulate it well enough. I also implement a speed system, similar to 2e, which helps further separate the bow types.Įdit- I also implement a different weapon proficiency system which makes a character proficient in a weapon and not a whole weapon type. The price variances jump significantly for the long bow and the great bow. I personally have 3 types of bows in my system including a short bow, a long bow, and a great bow(damages for each are d6+1, d8, and d10). While real world uses are not always practiced, they may help in any campaign to provide a sense of realism. This can make a longbow rare and expensive. These also used a certain type of wood for their construction(usually yew). Also, most cultures did not use a true long bow (the obvious are the classic English longbow and to an extent, the flat bow and the Japanese yumi).
